12:09 pm - Writing

charlotteu
I'm not entirely pleased with the amount of writing I've done so far but relatives insist on my spending time with them for some bizarre reason! The quality of it seems reasonable at the moment, though - it's not complete drivel, which is nice as most of it's been done between 11pm and 2am. Does anyone else find such odd times the best for writing? "Moonlight, in a darkened room" and all that I suppose :)

My problem at the moment is that I have many different sections, but it's not quite a cohesive whole at the moment...by quite a way. I have a rough idea of what I want where but the sheer problem of organising it is beginning to get to me. I tend to write scenes as I want to, which means there's bits skipped and bits I know I have to fill in etc, but when it's all on screen I find it's much harder to organise than in a printed version. Does anyone else find this/know a way around it?

Good luck to all in the New Year!

11:35 am - Attention, writers of Original Fiction!

rosewildeirish
Original Fiction Writer, irishaithne needs YOU!

For my publishing program, I have to publish a book (well, I've chosen a book). I'm doing short stories by female authors and the theme I'm working on is anti-Chick Lit, meaning stories that deal with cliches of the genre through parody, satire, or just turns it around.

If you have a story that would fit this, or want to write one, please let me know! I can't offer anything for them, and there will be editing and revisions.

Thank you!

Well, my writing portfolio is due and I thought I'd take advantage of any tips/advice this community had to offer...I did consider doing something to avoid gender pronouns and I've messed around with timing words a little, to avoid it being too entirely human but I don't think it works exactly.

6:06 pm - RPS in fanfic

charlotteu
Hey - question...

I've been asked to suggest parameters for a fanfic competition to promote an upcoming film. The suggestion that's been given is to have a competition putting the actors into a story from another genre ie x-files/harry potter/west wing/whatever.

I'm not sure it's a great idea....personally I'm squicky on the idea of putting real people into fic, but particularly actors into another genre seems like it'd be a bad idea..

Thoughts?

4:14 pm - Challenge

charlotteu
As some people have suggested challenges might be interesting.

Write a story of 500 words or more (ish!) on one or more of the following:

kalon - beauty that is more than skin deep

kalology - study of beauty

current mood: anticpatory

A question, before I go find some fic to post....what do people want from the community? Because I think commentary on fic is great but some people aren't as keen....

So, if you post a story, what do you want me to do? Read it, undoubtedly. Comment on it? Tell you it's fab or tell you where to improve? (Or both?)

9:32 pm - Your wish

Happy holidays, tangleofthorns.

Your wish Number Ten fits the goals of others on your Flist!

I'll offer a link that's taught me about the business side of writing. Publishers Lunch is a Monday-Friday e-list of events in publishing as of that morning. Once a week, Lunch Weekly is released with details of the major book sales, including book blurb, agent for the deal, and acquiring editor/publisher. This service is free.

As a paid member, you have access to the website's job board, deal listings, etc.

When you're at the point of querying agents, or looking to match your manuscript to a publisher, this is an excellent resource. And as a reader, you'll learn what to put on your To Be Read list waaaay in advance.

First of all -- happy Christmas to tangleofthorns.

She requested this on her wishlist, and how could I resist such a plea?

So, with that in mind, happy Christmas to everybody!

(And be like Holden: run away from school, buy a hooker, talk to her, and then get threatened by her pimp. That's the true Christmas story.)
